Artist's Statement Project #1
For Project 1: Son of a Serendipitous Glitch, I created eleven glitched images exploring the idea of memories and childhood becoming distorted and corrupted over time. I was especially interested in how memories can feel vivid and familiar while also becoming fragmented, altered, or unreliable as we get older.
I used vintage Disney posters as the base for the images because they represent a nostalgic idea of childhood. Rather than completely destroying the posters, I wanted the original images to remain somewhat visible underneath the distortion, similar to how an old memory can still be recognizable even when certain details have faded or changed.
The glitches act as a visual representation of time, fading memories, and the imperfect way we remember the past. Colors become displaced, images break apart, sections overlap, and recognizable elements become difficult to interpret. This creates a tension between familiarity and distortion by making the viewer recognize the original image, but something about it feels incomplete.
The nostalgic appearance of older posters and digital glitches also creates a contrast between the past and the technology of the present. The resulting images feel like fragments of childhood that have been recovered but are no longer completely intact. Similarly how technology has altered our future.
Ultimately, the project explores how nostalgia can preserve memories while time simultaneously changes them. We never truly remember the past exactly as it happened, memories are continually altered by time, emotion, and our own experiences.
