When reading Re-Viewing Visual Literacy in the “Bain d’ Images” Era, I learned a lot about how we live in a visual culture era and how that affects us. The term that Maria Avgerinou used that I thought was very clever was “image bath.” She used this term to describe how everything around us today consists of images and messages. With this huge spike of visual imagery and marketing in recent years, it immensely influences our perception of the world and ourselves. Ever since the internet and social media took over our day to day lives, people have been more disconnected from the world around them. Another idea that was mentioned in this article that surprised me was that the, “current generation of children and young people are very familiar with the expressions of our visual culture due to spending more time watching TV programs and interacting with their computer stations than attending school.” Ever since I have been alive, there has been technology in our world. Although it didn’t have an extreme presence in my life until I was in middle school and high school, it is crazy to see what world kids are growing up in today. It makes me scared to think about the future and how my kids will grow up, since the internet is so prominent while I am still fairly young. I think that if people continue to let technology dominate their everyday lives, like we are right now, the future generations will have no aspect of differentiating a digital world from a natural one.
